28th Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forum – The Geopolitical Impact of Digital Currencies
Hon. Erik Bethel emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to enhance efficiency in financial transactions. He highlighted the need to address transparency and governance issues in fund transfers, and to consider tracking World Bank loans transparently with blockchain technology which promises to revolutionize financial management and monitoring. He also discussed the U.S. dollar’s dominance in global trade and central bank reserves, raising concerns about its status as the world’s reserve currency and highlighting the impact of U.S. deficits on global financial stability and the risk of hyperinflation.
Additionally, Mr. Bethel highlighted emerging initiatives by BRICS countries to reduce reliance on the dollar in trade settlements and cited the collaboration to establish alternative cross-border payment systems outside the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) and the dollar’s realm. He anticipated that these developments would have game-changing impact on economics, finance, and central banking.
