Hon. Neptali Gonzales discussed the Philippines’ stance on the South China Sea, emphasizing its strategic and economic importance as a major global trade route and resource-rich area. While multiple nations assert competing claims, the Philippines maintains sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea, including the Kalayaan Island Group, Scarborough Shoal, and its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The country’s claims are backed by international law, particularly UNCLOS and the 2016 arbitration ruling, which reaffirmed its sovereign rights. However, China’s aggressive militarization, gray-zone tactics, and interference with Philippine resource exploration continue to pose significant challenges.
Despite these threats, the Philippines remains steadfast in defending its territorial integrity. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has affirmed that no part of the country’s territory will be ceded, leading to increased Philippine military and coast guard presence in the West Philippine Sea. Government agencies, including the National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea and the National Maritime Council, ensure coordinated efforts in defense, law enforcement, resource management, and diplomacy. The Philippines has also strengthened security alliances with the U.S., Japan, and Australia, engaging in joint patrols and military exercises under agreements like EDCA to enhance defense capabilities and maintain regional stability.
The Philippine Congress has played a vital role in reinforcing the country’s maritime entitlements through legislation such as the Archipelagic Baseline Act, the Maritime Zones Act, and the Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act. These laws affirm the Philippines’ maritime claims and legal rights under international law. Additionally, the Philippine government continues to modernize its defense forces through initiatives like the Self-Reliant Defense Posture Revitalization Act to deter and respond to external threats effectively. These collective efforts highlight the Philippines’ firm commitment to protecting its sovereignty, upholding international law, and ensuring peace and security in the region.
