Hon. Mark Cojuangco gave a brief presentation on the current outlook of the Philippine nuclear energy sector. He presented data showing current installed electric capacity and its high generation cost. He posited that transitioning to nuclear energy could reduce this cost as uranium has a significantly higher energy density than fossil fuels. He noted that the energy disparity between the Philippines and other emerging economies like Vietnam is further exacerbated by geopolitical factors such as rising coal prices. Hon. Cojuangco observed that, while the country has a fully constructed 620-megawatt nuclear power plant and potential logistical support from countries such as South Korea, it is far from achieving energy independence and security. He strongly advocated for the development of nuclear energy as an alternative source of energy.
